SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

For months we've heard the debate over a proposed dog park at Hamel's Park in Shreveport. Much of that debate has taken place between city council and Mayor Cedric Glover, and in some cases, in and out of the court room, it has included the Dog Park Alliance. But on Tuesday the public's opinion was stated for the record.

City Councilman Michael Corbin called a special meeting to get the public's input on the controversial proposal.

Those who opposed it took issue with the Hamel's Park location, saying it lacked the proper infrastructure. And those who support it reminded Mayor Glover that the project had already been voted on and passed by city council, and even though it was vetoed by Mayor Glover, the council overrode his veto.

About 20 people packed in to the mayor's meeting room and told city leaders how they felt about the dog park. Each person had to abide by a time limit that lasted only a few moments.

Dog Park Alliance member, Cynthia Keith, and Dog Park Alliance attorney, Daniel Keele also took part in the public comments.

City leaders also met Tuesday to talk about a way to pay for the federally-mandated improvements to the city's sewage infrastructure.

City Council member Jeff Everson says that during that discussion, a water rate increase was discussed. In order for the plan to move forward, the increase proposal would have to go before the City Council next week.

The amount of the increase has not yet been decided on, but Everson says part of the proposal is to make it a gradual increase, so that customers don't get hit with it all at once.

$200m worth of repairs remain. this rate hike would pay for those.
