3 firefighters hospitalized while battling blaze in Henderson County

HENDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Three first responders are recovering after being injured in a house fire. The fire broke out around 9:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Royal Drive near Lake Palestine in Chandler. Three firefighters fought the blaze together for nearly 15 minutes before back-up crews arrived.

“They come out, they were overcome by heat,” Brownsboro Assistant Chief, Rusty Quattlebaum said.

They were taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion.

"You get two people from this volunteer fire department, two people from this fire department, it takes considerable resources on this and the county to put a crew together," Quattlebaum said.

That’s how it works in Henderson County, where fire crews respond voluntarily. By the time back-up crews arrived, those three members of Westside Fire had contained the fire to the kitchen.

"Hot July day, it, it's tough," Quattlebaum said.

The homeowner said the fire started after she left the burner on in the kitchen.

"I turned the burner on to boil some water and I went to the back for just a few minutes," Dinah Hudson, the homeowner, said.

When she returned her kitchen was filled with smoke.

"Took me a while to burn it down, didn't it?"

Hudson joked with friends and neighbors who came out for support.

"Oh my God look at my kitchen," Hudson said.

While the kitchen suffered significant damage, everyone is expected to be okay, including the people who rushed to put the fire out.

No other people were hurt by the fire, but one of the Hudson’s three dogs did not survive.
