TJC to add softball program

Released by Tyler Junior College

Tyler, Texas - Tyler Junior College has announced the addition of women's softball to its lineup of NJCAA Division I athletics, beginning in Fall 2014.

It will become part of one of the most successful community college athletic programs in the country, with TJC boasting 49 national championships.

TJC athletes are as successful in the classroom as they are on the playing field. During the 2012-13 season, the Apache ladies achieved a cumulative grade point average of more than 3.0.

An integral part of the college's 2014 strategic plan is its commitment to educate student athletes and instill the values of honor, sportsmanship and respect for others.

The addition of women's softball levels the playing field for TJC's student-athletes by offering six sports each for males and females.

There are more than 14,000 high schools that field softball teams in the U.S.

TJC anticipates recruiting a very competitive team by providing scholarship opportunities to local softball players seeking a high-quality education and collegiate-level athletic competition.

"Adding softball to TJC athletics has been a dream of ours for quite some time," TJC President Dr. Mike Metke said. "There are so many talented female student-athletes in East Texas, and we are excited to offer this new opportunity for them to continue their athletic and educational endeavors close to home."

A search for a head coach will begin immediately.

"Women's softball is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and it fits perfectly into our overall athletic program," said Dr. Tim Drain, TJC director of intercollegiate athletics. "We are so thankful to our Board of Trustees and to Dr. Metke and his executive cabinet for the vision of adding softball to our department."

On a hot, humid East Texas Monday, Jake Arledge sat and visited with Angelina Baseball Coach Jeff Livin. After the morning talk the two would leave the AC cooled office and venture into the heat to look for an apartment. Five years ago, Arledge would have never thought his life would bring him to Lufkin.
