Scam artists are posing as utility representatives
BATESVILLE, IN (FOX19) -
The Batesville Police Department (BPD) reports a new scam involving people posing as utility company representatives and threatening to turn off the power unless a delinquent bill is paid.
A phony power company employee will demand payment by a specific time and encourage victims to purchase a Green Dot Visa card or other forms of a pre-paid debt card. Once the victim does it, funds will be loaded onto the card and the fake company representative reaps the payment via phone.
The (BPD) encourages consumers to consult their local power company if there is a question about an electric bill or to report suspicious phone calls.
