Crews reach 92% containment on Doce Fire

PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

Fire officials said the Doce Fire northwest of Prescott was 92 percent contained through Friday morning.

Crews were reduced and more resources were being reassigned or released to get ready for future fires, according to officials with the U.S. Forest Service and Prescott National Forest.

Stiff fire restrictions remained in place in the Prescott National Forests and surrounding areas.

The human-caused fire in the Granite Mountain Recreation Area that started June 18 has burned 6,767 acres at a cost of $6.6 million. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Only 89 people remained on the fire Friday morning, including two hand crews, five engines and two helicopters.

Fire officials warned that the extensive heat wave hitting the Southwest might produce interior pockets of vegetation within the fire to burn and be visible.

They said ash whirls are often mistaken for smoke and are created by a whirlwind with cool air pushing down while hot air lifts up, carrying ash with it.

Only one minor injury was reported.

Alto Pits and Dosie Pit areas remain closed. Recreation residences managed under permit by the Prescott National Forest remained closed.  Firefighters continued rehabilitation and mop-up efforts Thursday.

Individuals who may have seen suspicious activity related to the Doce Fire are asked to contact Forest Service Law Enforcement and Investigations at 928-527-3508 or 928-527-3509.
