Police have arrested the man they suspect is linked to a deadly shooting early Thursday morning in Shreveport's Morningside neighborhood.

Gregory Johnson, 49, of Shreveport was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals at a location on Hollywood Avenue Thursday night.

Johnson's arrest comes after police were called to a home in the 600 block of Central St. just before 3:30 a.m. There, they found the victim had been shot at least once in the upper body. The man, now identified as 58-year-old Walter Howard, was rushed to LSU Hospital where he later died.

Officers searched the area and at one point suspected the gunman was hiding out in a house in the 600 block of W. 69th St., but no one was found there. The weapon used in the shooting has also not been recovered.

Police say they believe the Johnson and Howard knew each other and were involved in a dispute that led up to the fatal shooting.

During the dispute, police say Johnson showed up at Howard's home armed with a handgun and fired numerous rounds through the front door after Howard refused to let him in.

Johnson has been booked into the Shreveport City Jail. Bond has been set at $250,000.
