George Foster Baseball Boot Camp building character in local kids

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) -

About 40 boys from across the Tri-State brushed up on baseball fundamentals at the George Foster Baseball Boot Camp on Wednesday in Blue Ash.

The kids also receive a lesson in character development.

About half of the participants come from military families and the other half from the inner city.  They learn baseball fundamentals like hitting, catching and throwing and character military traits of the army.

Discipline is the core of the boot camp, according to Drill Sgt. and army veteran Paul Brondhaver.

"Loyalty, duty, integrity, personal courage, selfless service, doing the right thing, making the right choices when nobody's looking. We hope they take some of these skills home and spread it among their friends, their family," said Brondhaver.

Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame inductee George Foster says the boot camp also stresses life skills.

"It's fun. It helps me to stay young or feel young and helps the kids to grow to that next level, and the confidence is very important and that's what we try to emphasize," Foster explained.

Nine-year-old Kameron Boggs of Roselawn added he's learning things that will help him beyond the baseball diamond, "Teaches us more about life, like how to be a better person and how to progress in life and get better in life."

The boys will graduate Thursday with improved baseball skills and a better outlook on life which will help them into adulthood.
