SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Three runners were treated for heat illness during an Arizona race purposely staged to step off during the hottest part of the day.

Two of those runners in Saturday's "Beat the Heat" race were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

The course at WestWorld in Scottsdale was set up with hydration stations every half mile. People also carried water bottles.

There was extra emergency personnel on hand. A total of 26 paramedics and firefighters were standing by to help people who needed it.

Folks took part in one of two races  - a 5k run and a 10k event.  Results of the races are posted at http://scottsdalebeattheheat.com/site/.

The sponsor of the event was PMT, Scottsdale's emergency services provider.
