A Tempe police officer was injured early Sunday after the patrol motorcycle he was operating was hit by a taxi.
The officer was traveling west on University at around 12:30 a.m. when a taxi cab traveling in the opposite direction made a wide, illegal U-turn into the officer's path, police said.
The officer collided with the taxi and was thrown over the handlebars, landing face first into the street, investigators said.
The officer was taken to Scottsdale Osborn Trauma Center with serious injuries. He's expected to be OK.
Impairment did not appear to be a factor, police said.
