PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It's a problem most people chose to ignore. But instead of walking the other way, Clint Richards faces it head-on. Five years ago, he was a junkie living on the street.

"I was on Van Buren smoking crack when my sister approached me randomly, gave me a bus ticket to California and said, 'Are you ready to go to treatment?' I got on the bus," Richards said.

For the founder of Last Chance Intervention, life has come full circle. Saturday night he and the members of the nonprofit organization wanted to offer hope to the hopeless.

Just before 2 a.m. near the corner of 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street, Richards bumped into John, who doesn't want his last name used.

"He stopped us and let us know it wasn't a safe neighborhood to be in. He had just gotten out of prison a couple days ago. He had been getting high since he got out. He was homeless and didn't have any place to go," said Richards.

Richards told CBS 5 he quickly connected with the 33-year-old.

"His story was so much like mine and his willingness, just the desperate desire that he had to be sober and have a good life. There was no question in my mind that this was the right guy for our program," said Richards.

John was immediately taken to Gallus Detox in Prescott. From there he will go to Chapter 5 Recovery. The scholarship for his treatment is worth more than $7,500.
