TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

Texarkana, Texas police say they have spoken to the person seen in dashcam video released Friday from the scene of a hit and run that resulted in the death of one of their officers.

TTPD had released the dashcam video from the night Officer William Sprague was fatally injured in a hit and run in hopes of identifying the young man seen getting out of the passenger side of a dark-colored SUV and running toward Officer Sprague's car.

He can be seen stopping in front of the police unit, looking down and off to the side of the vehicle. His hand goes up to his mouth as if in surprise before he jogs back to the SUV, getting inside before the SUV drives away.

Chief Investigator Sgt. Shawn Fitzgerald says that person, who police have clarified was not a suspect, recognized himself in the video after it was posted on the KSLA News 12 Facebook Page and contacted authorities.

That person has not been identified. Sgt. Fitzgerald says the information provided "proved beneficial" to the investigation.

Investigators say Officer Sprague was hit by a vehicle that was leaving Grady T. Wallace Park early on the morning of Friday, June 14. 21-year-old Justin Sanders was arrested later that same day and charged with aggravated assault on a public servant. He remains in custody at the Bi-State Justice Center on $1.5 million bond.

Officer Sprague succumbed to his injuries on the following day, becoming the fourth officer in the history of the department to die in the line of duty. He was laid to rest following a funeral with full police honors on Tuesday.

At last check, investigators were still working to determine what charges Sanders will face as a result of Sprague's death.
