Salvation Army of Tyler to cut services, programs due to decreased donations
TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
Because of a decrease in donations, one local nonprofit says it's cutting some of its programs and services.
The Salvation Army of Tyler needs money. They're getting close to the end of their fiscal year and they say the donations just haven't been what they usually are.
As a result, they're several hundred thousand dollars short of where they need to be able to provide services to everyone who needs them.
Major Ben Lawrence says it's not unusual to need money this time of year.
"In the nonprofit world, when the summer months get here things get tight with finances," he said.
But a string of natural disasters this spring, like the Oklahoma tornadoes, have left things tighter than normal.
"The money that usually donors give to Tyler is going to those disasters, and rightfully so. Those folks are in far greater need than we are here in Tyler, but it has caused us to run a little bit more short than normal," Lawrence said.
So short that they're having to stop offering a public lunch for anyone not staying at the center and cut their rental and utility assistance programs.
"We also have shortened our social service hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, just because the shortage of funds," said Lawrence.
Lawrence says that while some of these changes might be necessary for the long-term, he hopes donations pick back up so the center can "finish the year strong" and help anyone who needs it.
"Scripture says you have not because you ask not, and so we've actually just made a plea to the great community of Tyler, and you know, they're stepping up and helping us out," Lawrence said. "And hopefully some of the programs that we put on a short - hopefully they will be short because of the generosity of the community."
If you'd like to help, there are several ways you can donate.
You can mail a check to the Salvation Army of Tyler at 633 North Broadway, Tyler, TX, 75702. You can also donate there in person from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
