Police: ER patient drives off in ambulance

A St. Helena Island man who was at the emergency room at Beaufort Memorial Hospital is accused of taking off in an ambulance.

Beaufort police responded at 5:10 p.m. Tuesday on a report of an ambulance theft from the emergency room entrance.

Police said medics took Clifton McNeill, 34, of St. Helena Island, had been transported to the hospital for a medical reason. He took out his I.V., walked out of a treatment room and forced open the exit door of the emergency room, according to police.

McNeill, who was wearing sweatpants, went up to an ambulance as a crew was in the back and asked them for a ride home. The crewmember got out to talk to him and McNeill got in and drove off, according to police.

Beaufort police, Beaufort County Sheriffs' Office and additional EMS personnel spotted McNeill driving the ambulance the wrong way near the intersection of Hermitage Road and Ribaut Road and blocked its path.

A "drive Stun" from a Taser, in which the Taser is not shot, but placed in contact with the suspect and activated, was used to bring the struggling man into custody, according to police.

McNeill was taken back to the emergency room and is under medical care.

No one was injured. Charges are pending upon the outcome of medical evaluations.
