Dying dog holds on to see owner return from deployment

(KLTV) -

A dog battling cancer managed to hang on long enough to see her owner return from a deployment overseas.

According to Jennifer Ralston's YouTube channel, Kermie, an 11-year-old beagle-lab-chow mix, was diagnosed with oral melanoma just a month after her owner, Eric, was deployed overseas. Eric's family was devastated, thinking Eric would never get to see his beloved pup again.

Given just a few months to live by her veterinarian, Kermie beat the odds, continuing to beat the cancer.

"As the end of the deployment drew nearer, hopes for a never-expected reunion began to creep into our minds," wrote Jennifer. "However, the tumor in her mouth was making in increasingly more difficult for her to eat or drink."

Jennifer says November, the homecoming month, was stressful. The family had no idea if Kermie would make it until Eric returned home. They fed her home-cooked meals, even hand-feeding her at times.

However, just twelve days before Eric was to return, the family found out his deployment was being extended indefinitely. They were sure there was no way the cancer-stricken dog would make it until Christmas.

But she kept fighting. A few days before Christmas, Eric made it home to Virginia.

"We received the best gift," wrote Jennifer. "It was all any of us wanted for Christmas."

After the reunion, the family was sure they would have to put Kermie down. But, she began eating and drinking again, without as much struggle.

"Watching the homecoming video, you cannot even see the struggles of the previous months," Jennifer said.

Kermie lived to see her 12th birthday in January, but things took a turn for the worse in February. Kermie lost her battle with cancer on February 22, 2013.
