Preliminary Longview ISD STARR test results show scores below state average

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Results from Longview ISD's most recent standardized testing show the district's students are performing below the state averages in reading and math. These scores determine whether or not the 5th and 8th graders advance to the next grade level.

Results from this spring's STARR tests at Longview ISD showed 81 percent of 5th graders met state requirements in reading and 85 percent met those requirements in math. State-wide, 87-percent of 5th graders passed the reading test and 87-percent of them passed in math.

For 8th grade, the results were similar.

According to statistics from the district, 82 percent of Longview ISD 8th graders passed the reading test. The state average of students who passed the 8th grade reading test was 89 percent. In math, 79 percent of Longview 8th graders passed the test, compared to the 86 percent of 8th graders state-wide.

Longview ISD officials say these test scores will play a smaller part in the district's accountability ratings than they did in years past.

Because the STARR test is still considered "new," the rigor of the exam is slowly increasing each year. The process of phasing in the testing curriculum is expected to take three years. Students who have not passed the math and reading potions of the test will get another chance next week.
