TYLER, TX (KLTV) -
As you're looking for summer activities to keep you busy, one Tyler shopping center wants you to know they're here to help.
"The Market at the Crossing" is one of Tyler's newest offering of retailers, and its owners have the goal of creating a gathering of shops with a family-friendly atmosphere at little to no cost to the customer. The owners say they hope to create the go-to place for couples and families in East Texas to create community.
The Market opened last August, and it's currently a home to seven locally-owned businesses that are all unique, including shops for organic gardening, old-timey toys, baby's clothing and women's fashion, jewelry, a cafe and a day spa.
Owner Patti Mehling said she and her husband Doug modeled The Market's design after a village in Rothenburg, Germany.
"Each store is unique, and we've really been steadfast to adhere to our mission, which was independently-owned stores operated by the owner and each offering something unique that we felt like didn't overlap into another store, but was totally complimentary," Mehling said.
And now that The Market has been open almost a year and those businesses are becoming established, Mehling's hope is that The Market becomes a welcome place for people of all ages.
"We wanted a place that families could come or couples could come. And certainly we want people to shop, but we want to be more than just a shopping destination," she said.
Mehling says many of The Market's shops are offering unique opportunities during the summer, including flower-arranging workshops at Moss on Wednesdays, game day at Just Imagine on Thursdays, and a children's story time at Fickle Baby on Saturdays.
And every second Friday night this summer, The Market is hosting an outdoor movie night called "Twilight."
"We've been privileged to have a lot of successful business adventures, and we just realize at this point in our life that we want to do something with a more lasting impact," Mehling said. "We realized that there are limited opportunities for families, and even couples, to have positive experiences that you're not traveling two hours to go and do."
