Local family targeted by sweepstakes claim

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A new twist on a familiar scheme leaves a Montgomery family out of some major cash. All of this started out with a group of people claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House.

A Montgomery man said they took $400 from his disabled nephew. And now they want more.

"It's like they're desperate to get this money," said Jeffery Rosatelli. "And they figure they've got a live one on the hook."

Rosatelli said his nephew Brad has impaired brain function, and he believes the callers took advantage of that.

"He answers the phone and they tell him they're from Publishers Clearing House and he's won $950,000 plus a brand new car plus six months free gas," he said.

But to get the prize, Brad was told he would have to wire $400 to an address in New Mexico.

"It makes me sick that people do this sort of thing to people who can't afford to lose it," Jeffery Rosatelli said. "They shouldn't do it to anybody, but it's even harder for us."

The next day, the callers upped the ante. They actually showed up at the house with the new car.

"To show him if you give us more money, $1400, we can give you this car and get you the $950,000 as soon as I find out I tell it's a scam."

Rosatelli said he has contacted the Montgomery Police Department, the FBI and Federal Trade Commission.

Publishers Clearing House does not ask for money up front if you win their contest. They've set up a web page dealing with just this issue, you can find it here.
