UIL Legislative Council approves proposal to limit full-contact football practices

AUSTIN, TX -

The University Interscholastic League moved another step closer to limiting the amount of full-contact football practice Tuesday morning..

On Tuesday, the UIL Legislative Council passed a recommendation from the league's medical advisory committee to limit the amount of full-contact, game-speed practice during the regular season to 90 minutes a week.

UIL athletic director Mark Cousins says the rule does not apply in spring drills or fall preseason practice, and kicks in the week of the first game.

The rule limits "game-speed tackling and blocking to the ground" and covers high school and middle school practices.

Cousins says the Texas rule tracks a growing trend in professional and college football to limit contact drills to reduce the number of injuries.

If approved by Michael Williams, the Texas Commissioner of Education, the proposal would go into effect on August 1.

Two other proposals were also approved by the legislative council. The first was a requirement to subject cheerleaders at UIL schools to state-mandated concussion management, as well as requiring cheer sponsors to complete safety training. A second proposal would require UIL participants to completed a Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness form.
