7 from 7: Stories for your Monday afternoon

Posted: Updated:

Welcome to your new week, neighbors. Here's hoping it's a great one!

Here are a few stories for you to peruse this afternoon:

1.  On the first day of his trial Monday, George Zimmerman got a look at the people who might decide whether he committed second-degree murder when he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The selection of jurors who both the prosecution and defense believe can be objective in the highly publicized case is expected to take all week, if not longer.

2. Inmates at an East Texas jail have different stories, as you can imagine; however, the inmates in this story have one thing in common: they all have green thumbs. A new gardening project has people talking about saving money and inmates working for their food. We'll show you the story on East Texas News at 5.

3. Dr. Ed Dominguez will join us at 5, as well, to discuss an issue that many people like to ignore: the need for sunscreen, and not just when lying on a lounge or boat.Check him out when we talk with him live from Dallas.

4. Tyler police have released the surveillance video of a robbery that occurred on Saturday night at the Dollar General at 2724 W. Gentry Pkyway in Tyler. Check it out by clicking here. We'll tell you more on East Texas News at 6.

5. If you picked up some fresh berries of any kind this weekend at the store or farmer's market, we have a great recipe for you today; click here to read it and watch the video, too, if you like. It's delicious!

6. Passing rates on the STAAR® end-of-course tests were largely stable during the second year of this program, with students faring best on science assessments and continuing to struggle with writing, according to statewide results for all 2012-13 STAAR tests released today. Read more about the results here.

7. Now for  today's most unusual story: according to the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, Doretha Bowman, 45, stabbed her boyfriend, Rickey Don Johnson, 53, of Harleton, in the arm Sunday after a female neighbor wished him "Happy Birthday." Read the whole story here.
