Habitat homeowner thankful to guardsmen

Posted: Updated:

An East Texas family will soon be given the keys to a new home through the efforts of habitat for humanity, with the special help of those wearing the uniform of service to our country. Cristy Calico and her four daughters are looking forward to moving in to their new Longview habitat home.

"It feels great , makes it extra special knowing that you built it yourself with the help of family and friends," she says. But this home had the special help over the last two days of 45 members of the Texas national guard.

They worked on everything from landscaping to fence lines to the homes interior.

"They came around the corner and I just started screaming. I was all excited . I could not believe they were coming to help me," Cristy says.

"These guys are citizen soldiers they have a lot of skills in the workforce on the civilian side of it," says guard staff sergeant Boyd Blair.

"I watched them lay the pad out, I helped with the outline of the house , the walls, every step," Cristy says.

They brought a special discipline to the effort of finishing the Calico house.

"They have a lot of skills to give back to the community , this is the perfect place for them to be able to use those," says Blair.

And for Calico, a memory that will always be connected to her home.

"I just want to tell them thank you I could have done it without them and it was their time that they came and volunteered when they didn't have to," Cristy adds.

The Calico family will be presented the keys to their new habitat home in a ceremony on Thursday.
