Through the war and rationing years and all that came after an East Texas couple has endured together and are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. They met in 1942. At Harleton Baptist church Claud and Evelyn Sherman celebrated 70 years of marriage.
"The war was on and I came to work in a Beaumont shipyard that's where I met my wife. I kind of fell in love with that blonde, I kind of made regular visits all the time," Claud says.
Married in 1943, Claud was drafted a few months later. Going on to fight with the 12th armored division in Germany.
"We went through an awful lot," he says.
"The war was going on and we didn't know anything and we kept our ears glued to the radio," says Evelyn.
They've gone through life's hard time's with a deep love, and a sense of humor.
"I guess I'm one of the luckiest old men in the world to have a wife as good she is and I'm surprised she put up with me. I'm still in love with her. I'm gonna keep her," says Claud.
"Its awesome I still can hardly believe it I thought when we celebrated our 50th well that was a milestone," Evelyn adds.
But today was about their love for each other, and how marriage can be a lifetime commitment.
"You have to put the other person first, and don't hold grudges," Evelyn says.
The Sherman's had 5 sons, 3 of them that went on to serve in Vietnam.
