Victim of fatal Smith Co. accident identified

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Emergency crews responded to a fatal accident in Smith County on Farm to Market Road 279 near the Neches River in Smith County on Thursday.

According to Van Zandt County Constable Pat Jordan, he and a Van Zandt County Department of Public Safety trooper responded to the accident around 10:30 a.m. A truck and a car collided and one person was killed. The constable and DPS trooper assisted until Smith County units arrived.

DPS confirms 26-year-old Lance Phillips of Chandler, lost control of his Honda Accord and veered into the path of an oncoming pickup truck. Phillips' passenger, 39-year-old Jody Lynn Phillips of Chandler, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lance Phillips is listed in good condition at a Tyler hospital. The driver of the pickup and his son were not injured. 

DPS confirms everyone was wearing their seat belts.
