East Texas Literacy Council Spelling Bee spells 'literacy' for free

Posted: Updated:

Once upon a time we all had to take spelling tests. Fortunately they were on paper.

That was not the case in Longview for some residents who haven't taken one in years. They had to do it out loud and in front of their peers.

Yes, the East Texas Literacy Council held their 22nd annual Spelling Bee for Literacy on June 5 at Pine Tree Junior High School.

Fifteen three-member teams joined the East Texas Literacy Council's Spelling Bee for Literacy to basically find out how long they could go without being embarrassed.

Only one group fell before the second round, then the more flowery words began to blossom.

"Geranium: g-e-r-a-n-i-u-m," Spelled a member of Texas Bank and Trust.

"Stentorian; s-k-i-n-t-o-r-i-a-n," spelled a member of Longview-Greggton Rotary.

"Stentorian: s-t-e-n-t-o-r-i-a-n," the Judge revealed.

"Metallurgy: m-e-t-a-l, I don't know," said a member of Spring Hill State Bank.

"Metallurgy: M-e-t-a-l-l-u-r-g-y," said the Judge.

Sometimes your nerves get you, sometimes it's the plurals.

"Reminiscences," said the judge the A First Christian Church member. She replied silently with disdain all over her face and missed the word.

Texas Bank and Trust used their mulligan and passed on 'glossolalia,'  and ended up with 'paduasoy.'

They spelled it correctly.

There were a whole lot more big words after that with a lot of highs and lows, and a giant bee. Good thing no one had an allergy.

It came down to Team Zonta and a team new to the Spelling Bee: St. Andrew Presbyterian. Zonta misspelled, St. Andrew got the word right, and then one more word: chassepot .

A good time was had by all; especially those who will learn to read with the money the bee generates.

Last year the East Texas Literacy Council In Longview served over 600 students. This year the Bee raised about $40,000.
