Smith Co. DA donates seven vehicles to sheriff's department

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham and Sheriff Larry Smith announced Tuesday that the DA's office is donating seven Dodge Chargers to the sheriff's department for use in the patrol and criminal investigation divisions.

The announcement was made at the Emergency Operations Center, which is located on Spur 248 in Tyler.

"These vehicles have served the DA's office well and still have a lot of life in them, so I am happy that Sheriff Smith has accepted our offer to continue using them to help prevent and solve crimes," said Matt Bingham.

"Tax dollars are tight and we very much appreciate the addition of these seven vehicles to our fleet," added Sheriff Smith. "When I took office, one of my goals was to bring in new and additional vehicles for our detectives and deputies. This donation helps achieve that goal and it does that without spending any additional taxpayer dollars. I'm very thankful to Mr. Bingham for these vehicles."

The three striped vehicles will be driven by supervisors on patrol. The unmarked vehicles will be utilized by the criminal investigations unit.

"The cars were originally purchased with drug forfeiture money; the radios were purchased with drug forfeiture money, so really it's a win, win situation for everyone. No cost for the tax payers, more vehicles on patrol, and more vehicles for the sheriff's department, which is something any fleet in law enforcement always needs because the cars are on the road all the time," Bingham said.

Smith says the vehicles will be out on the street immediately.
