Store surveillance video shows weekend theft, suspect at large

Posted: Updated:

Three days after the crime, authorities are still looking for a suspect. Monday police were asking for the public's help identifying the man in a weekend convenience store theft.

Police say around 11:30 Friday night, a Hispanic male stole cash from the register at the Valero on East Gentry Parkway. According to authorities, no one was hurt and the man was not armed.

In store surveillance video, you can see that despite not being armed, the man was able to get away with piles of money. The man authorities need help identifying is seen walking into the store wearing dark clothes with a scarf covering his face. With something in his hand, he jumps on the counter and tells the clerk to open up the cash register. After that, he carefully pulls stacks of money out of the drawer and takes off.

"Witnesses stated that he was about 5 foot 8 inches tall and had a stubby beard. They went northbound on East Gentry and they did leave in a small SUV-type-Jeep," says Tyler Police Officer Don Martin.

Police say the man told the clerk it was a robbery, but that object in his hand tells police otherwise.

"The odd thing was he presented a cell phone versus a weapon, but maybe he thought that she thought it might be a weapon," says officer Martin.

The thief hops off the counter and pulls down the cloth around his neck, exposing his face to the cameras. After trying to escape through a locked door, he tries another and makes his get-away. The quality of the video makes the details hard to see, but police still hope someone out there knows something.

"If people observe what he's wearing, the black hat, along with that type of scarf, which could have been another item of clothing, and they say, 'I know who that is because I recognize that,' so hopefully, we're relying on the people to help us solve this case," says officer Martin.

Witnesses tell police the man was thin, but had a muscular build. During the theft he was wearing a black cap with a white "V" on the side of it.
