East Texas cyclist in serious condition after collision with car
On Wednesday, the Longview Police Department dispatched officers to an accident near the intersection of Premier Road and Harrison Road.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found that a bicyclist had collided with a vehicle after failing to stop at a stop sign. 14-year-old Michael David Charles Bonham, of Longview, had been riding his bike in the area when he failed to stop at the intersection. Bonham was struck by a black 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by 21-year-old Carlos Lopez-Alvarez.
Bonham was then transported to Good Shepherd Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He was later transported to a Dallas hospital.
The Longview Police Department wants to remind citizens that a person riding a bicycle must obey the same traffic laws that motor vehicles are required to follow. Drivers need to be aware of their surroundings, especially in neighborhoods, or in areas where children may be playing. Bicycle riders are encouraged to wear a bicycle helmet to prevent head injuries that could occur from an accident. More information on bicycle safety can be found on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website at www.nhsta.gov/bicycles.
