TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Smithfield and Brookshire's together donated 40,000 pounds of protein today to the East Texas Food Bank.

The companies say food banks are currently struggling to meet an increasing demand in the number of people seeking help. They point to the continuing recession and unemployment numbers for the growing need.

Going with the theme of summer, the companies donated hot dogs, hoping to provide people in need with the opportunity to grill the summer favorite.

"A lot of food banks get a lot of donations but protein is really hard to come by, so we're very honored and pleased to be here with that," said Mike Gresham, Smithfield's West Regional Sales Manager. "The good news is that that equals 160,000 servings, but guess what, that will be gone in a week or so."

Gresham said hot dogs were also chosen because they are a good protein for all ages, including children.
