18 DWI arrests made over Memorial Day weekend

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

The Tyler Police Department has released the results of their No-Refusal initiative for the Memorial Day weekend.

A grand total of 18 DWI arrests occurred over the weekend and on the Memorial Day holiday. The arrests result from the efforts of several different agencies in East Texas.

  • The Department of Public Safety had nine DWI arrests.
  • Tyler Police Department had five DWI arrests.
  • Whitehouse Police Department had two DWI arrests.
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife had two Boating While Intoxicated arrests.

Texas Parks and Wildlife also received two search warrants to obtain blood. The No-Refusal initiative is part of a multi-agency No-Refusal DWI campaign. Upon the arrest of a suspected drunk driver, he or she will be asked if they would submit to blow into a breath-test machine or take a blood test.

If the driver refuses and says "No" officers will obtain an immediate search warrant signed by a judge on call to have blood drawn by a nurse on staff at the Smith County Jail. The blood is then analyzed to determine whether the driver's blood-alcohol concentration is 0.08 or higher, the legal limit for driving in Texas.
