OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A routine trip to the grocery store took a terrifying turn for an Overland Park woman. Police said her swift actions may have saved her from harm.

It was 11 p.m. Monday when a woman in her 30s left a Price Chopper at 135th Street and Mission Road in Leawood.

On her way out of the store she passed by a man who was walking into the store.

"There's something that gave me a feeling, I don't know ... something wasn't right," the woman told KCTV5.

The woman told police she had no idea who the man was, but quickly noticed as she left that he'd gone back to his car and started following her.

"The moment he came out of the Price Chopper, I knew I needed to keep my eyes on the rear view mirror," she said. "As I was turning around into the cul-de-sac, that's when I noticed he was wearing a black ski mask."

Worried, the woman called police. Authorities told her to drive to a police station, but she missed her exit. Police then told her where to go.

"She knew the person was following her. She was wanting to head home, and realizing that this guy, who knows what he's up to," officer Gary Mason said.

Just across the street from the police station, officers were waiting. They pulled over the man and found the ski mask inside. Eric Kaplan, 18, is now charged with reckless stalking and two misdemeanor drug charges.

Police said the victim did everything right.

"She's very scared. Didn't know what would have happened if she would have stopped and made contact with the gentleman. On her part, she did the best thing and called us and didn't go to her house," Mason said.

Police told they woman they also found lube, a knife and gloves among other items in Kaplan's car. He is free after posting a $1,500 bond.

"You think you're fine going to the Price Chopper at 11:15 at night, and you're not safe anywhere," the victim said.
