Local students finally meet their soldier pen pals

Posted: Updated:

Two soldiers paid a special visit to their pen pals in the Tri-State on Friday.

Students at Williamstown Elementary School have been writing the soldiers for over a year, who both served in Afghanistan.

Initially, they anticipated one or two letters. Instead, they received hundreds from multiple classes at the school and say it really helped their morale.

"The children would write back to us, send care packages, cookies, which was a really great help while we were in Afghanistan, just because you get so tired with the day in-day out doing the same thing... Not really knowing if it matters, and just seeing that someone back home cares," explained Lt. John Benson.

"I feel excited. I feel happy in every way," added third grader Dustin Taulbee about meeting the soldier pen pals.
