ETX Boy Scout Council shares their vote

Posted: Updated:
EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -

Many conservatives with the Boy Scouts of America are threatening to leave the group following Thursday's vote to lift its longtime national ban on admitting openly gay scouts.

However, the organization said it will continue to exclude openly gay adults from leadership roles. Of the roughly 1,400 voting members of the council who cast ballots, 61 percent supported the proposal. \

Greg Leitch is the Assistant Scout Executive for Boy Scout of America's East Texas Area Council. Leitch was still at that meeting on Friday, but sent a statement reading, "Our voting delegates voted 'no' forthe resolution per the wishes of our local volunteers and executive board."

He also wanted to remind the Scouting family, "to remember that our mission to serve young people tobecome strong adults will continue in East Texas because our children needScouting."

The policy will go into effect January 1, 2014.

The East Texas Area Council does have an official statement, which can be found by clicking here.
