WW II veteran’s headstone found, ETX woman searches for his family

Posted: Updated:

A World War II veteran's headstone is sitting at Kilgore City Hall while a city administrator searches for the family it belongs to.

The headstone was found on a shore of the Sabine River almost a year ago. Kilgore Cemetery Administrator Sonja Wheeler says a sheriff's deputy brought it to her office.

She doesn't know who Virgil George Green is but she has a piece of his family's history and is determined to find them.

"With a monument, so many people see that and they see names and dates and they just attribute that to that's a permanent marker that says they're gone forever when actually that's a story," Wheeler says.

She is certain this World War II veteran has a story, "I'm sure that he has family that lives on, he was probably a father, a son definitely, a brother, an uncle, a grandfather."

Wheeler searched her records, the Internet, and the local VA office but cannot find any leads on where Virgil George Green was from or where he was buried.

"This may mean nothing to anyone else but this family so therefore it means a lot to me," Wheeler says, "Whether a veteran has died during a war, in their service time, or post service, they still gave their life."

Virgil George Green was born on Oct. 17, 1907. He served in the army during World War II and died May 30, 1985.

"I would really like to find his family by memorial day if not by the anniversary of his death," says Wheeler.

She believes there's a reason Green's headstone was brought to her. She hopes someone in East Texas will recognize this veteran's name and help bring his monument home.
