LC softball coach Avery stepping back

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Just days after  Lee County High School baseball coach Rob Williams retired after 25 years, head softball coach Lynn Avery is stepping down after nearly three decades.

Avery is stepping back from her head coaching post after 28 years with the team, and will be an assistant with the Lady Trojans.

Head assistant Dwayne Suggs will become the new head coach.

Avery took over a team with one region title to their credit and has turned them into one of the best softball teams in south Georgia.

In her 28 seasons as coach, Avery won 676 games and 12 region titles.

Her teams made three Elite Eight appearances and played for one state title.

Always the modest type, Avery doesn't take much credit for building the Lady Trojans' program.

Instead she says it's all about the players and coaches around her.

"We're very fortunate. It takes a little bit of everybody to do that," she says. "I didn't score a run or anything else. It took my coaching staff and it took those players. Those players are the ones who dedicate themselves, who come out and work everyday."

Suggs has been Avery's head assistant for the past five seasons.

He says he knows he has big shoes to fill, but isn't intimidated by the job because of the working relationship he's developed with Avery.

"She's like a sister to me. I can talk to her even more than my real sisters," Suggs says. "There's no intimidation. She's kind of given me some reins here in the last few years to kind of put some things in place for the program."
