After our stirring welcome at Reagan National Airport, the 30 East Texas World War II traveled to the Air Force Memorial. A short walk from the Pentagon, the memorial wasn't here on Sept. 11, but had it been, the memorial's three spires, reaching 270 feet in the sky, would have been roughly in the flight path terrorists used to attack the pentagon.
The spires represent the Air Force's 3 core values: integrity, service and excellence.
These men and women - all in their 80sand 90s, seemed to have been energized - even though they've been traveling for almost 14 hours now. Perhaps it was the roaring reception they got at the airport. Perhaps it is the many school children and current military who have come up to them saying, "Thank you for your service, sir." Perhaps it's the simple fact that indeed, this is our greatest generation. As one person said today, "These people, saved the world."
