Knights "focused but loose" before state semis

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Deerfield-Windsor Knights aren't feeling the pressure heading into this weekend's GISA AAA State Baseball Semifinals.

Maybe it's the nine seniors on the squad.

Or it could be the fact that this is the Knights' third straight semifinal appearance.

Whatever it is, the Knights are staying loose before their home series against Brookwood begins Friday.

But they haven't lost their focus.

"We've been loose all year because baseball's been fun, and it's still fun," says Knights' P Weston King. "But we know we're playing for something now. We've taken another step. We definitely all know it and we've come to practice ready to get to work."

Head Coach Rod Murray credits the team's seniors for being leaders and taking charge.

"They don't get real high. They don't get real low and a lot of times they calm us down," Murray says. "They've been through the wars, a lot of tough series, and that's certainly showing right now."

Many of those seniors know exactly what is in store for them Friday.

The Knights were state semifinalists in 2012, and state runners-up in 2011.

This season, they hope to break through and claim the school's fifth state baseball title.

For them to do that, many of the Knights know it will be up to the seniors to do what they've done all year.

"The seniors have really taken over when someone has a bad game or a bad at-bat, and get their heads back in the game and get everyone focused," says senior CF Davis Hines. "I think everyone knows the goal we're trying to achieve right now."

Game 1 against Brookwood starts at 5:00 Friday in Albany. Game 2 is Saturday at 1:00, with Game 3 to follow if necessary.
