Local grassroots efforts aid OK tornado victims

As tornado survivors in Oklahoma gather a more clear idea to the extent of damage from Monday's twister, relief continues to pour in from all over the country, including the Tri-State.

On Wednesday, there were plenty of local grassroots efforts to aid the tornado victims.

Celebration Church in Mason has a relatively small congregation, but they have a big heart. Pastor Rick Groover says they have a need to help the Oklahoma tornado victims.

"When this hit Oklahoma, it was just a natural burden. I also have friends out there... To want to be involved and not just sit and cry and be moved, but to actually do something," said Groover.

Pastor Groover and his congregation have collected items like food and water to send to Oklahoma, but plenty of other items remain on the list.

"We need a lot of work gloves. We need mosquito repellant, sun screen, new packs of underwear and new packs of socks," he said.

Groovers says those items will be a big help to people doing recovery work in the Oklahoma heat.

There are other items needed that are being collected at Kenton County Library branches on behalf of Matthew 25 Ministries. Library Communications Director Robin Klaene says they're looking for items people usually don't think about for emergencies.

"Non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, infant care needs, soap, shampoo, toothpaste - Things like that," said Klaene.

Celebration Church received help rounding up supplies from Master Provisions, a charitable non-profit in Florence, Kentucky.

John Eldridge with Master Provisions says supplies come from a variety of sources.

"The Pepsi Corporation, they gave us some canned drinks. They're giving us skids of bottled water. We've gotten some hand sanitizer products, disinfectant," explained Eldridge.

Eldridge says some items are still in short supply.

"People forget the babies and one thing we don't have anything of right now to send is diapers, toilet products and baby food," Eldridge told FOX19.

Celebration Church plans to send two trucks with a total of 45,000 pounds of emergency supplies to Oklahoma this weekend.

The goal is to give the tornado survivors some help during the recovery process and a little bit of hope.
