LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The prosecution and defense delivered opening statements Wednesday in the second murder trial surrounding a body buried in a basement.

Defense attorneys for Jeffrey Mundt depicted co-defendant Joseph Banis as a manipulator and psychopath.

The jury saw pictures of Banis he posted on a dating website, photos of him flashing a gun, video of an apparent confession and heard the 911 call Mundt made the night police discovered the body of Jamie Carroll.

A jury found Banis guilty of complicity to murder in March for the death of Carroll. After his conviction, Banis agreed to a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for 20 years in exchange for his testimony against Mundt. Banis also had to waive his right to appeal. His formal sentencing is set for June.

Carroll disappeared in December 2009. His body was found six months later buried in the basement of the home Banis shared with Jeffrey Mundt after Banis was arrested during a domestic dispute between the couple.

Mundt faces murder, robbery and tampering with evidence charges. Banis is expected to be called to testify.

Attorneys are expected to call their first witness Thursday.
