7 from 7: Stories for your Wednesday afternoon

Posted: Updated:

Good afternoon, everyone. We hope you're getting some nice rain at your house this afternoon, and that you'll drive safely if you have to get out in it!

Here are some stories we think you'll want to check out to get you through the remainder of your afternoon:

1. A young hunter who grew up with a fascination about dinosaurs and a dream of hunting what some call “living dinosaurs” has harvested the largest alligator ever certified in Texas. You won't believe the size of this animal.

2. According to the National Institutes of Health, the types of vegetables or fruits that most often appear to be protective against cancer are raw vegetables, followed by allium vegetables, carrots, green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, and tomatoes. Our local farmers markets are full of those delicious locally grown treats that could help you avoid cancer; read more here.

3. An East Texas woman whose parents are immigrants says the debate about immigration in the U.S. is actually very positive. She weighs in on the debate tonight on East Texas News at 5 as she talks with KLTV's Shaley Sanders.

4.  Tonight is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for an East Texas woman, Kree Harrison, as she has a great shot at becoming the next "American Idol."  Our Caleb Beames caught up with previous reality show tv stars in East Texas to get their thoughts on what Harrison is likely feeling tonight. You can hear what they have to say on East Texas News at 5.

5. Armed staff is a reality now at one East Texas School district in response to recent events involving shootings and threats directed toward schools. KLTV's Bob Hallmark went to Union Hill ISD to discuss whether teacher, parents and students are feeling safer as a result. You can hear what they told Bob tonight on East Texas News at 6.

6.  Safety concerns are spurring $1 million worth of renovation at a student housing complex near UT Tyler. The apartments, in the 3000 block of Old Omen Road, will soon have a new name to go along with their new look. New alarm systems, security cameras, and gate improvements are ways the apartment complex is trying to cut back on crime. See what else is new here.

7. It's raining! Check out your live weather here, and make sure to download our free weather app for your iPhone or android phone in your app store. It is incredibly helpful...so good that you'll be surprised that it's free.
