EAST TEXAS (KLTV) - There are a few agencies of the federal government in which you expect partisan motives to play a part of their operation but there are also several governmental agencies that you trust will be non-partisan.
It has recently come to light the IRS engaged in what is essentially harassment of tax payers that were aligned with the Tea Party and other conservative groups. U.S. citizens were singled out and put under extreme scrutiny by IRS employees. The results were much longer than normal delays in processing tax returns, some being delayed for more than a year.
The IRS issued a statement admitting that some employees misunderstood policy or weren't trained properly on procedure. So here we have members of a government agency probing, no invading the privacy of U.S. citizens because of their political views. It is a dangerous situation and one not to be repeated.
So now it is up to the president to gather information from an investigation and deal with those responsible. And the punishment needs to be severe. Government distrust is very high and if the punishment doesn't match the crime in this case, distrust will escalate. And then measures must be instituted so this doesn't happen again now matter what party the president belongs to.
Only then will trust be built and that will make for a Better East Texas.
