T.C. Dove witnessed one of the most horrifying scenes of his life while driving along I-49 near Natchitoches Wednesday.

"When we pulled up beside the car, I could see the car was on fire, he recalled."

19 year old Savanna Spencer was in that car. The college sophomore from Bossier City lost control of her car, crossed the median and slammed into an oncoming 18 wheeler.

Dove jumped out of his truck thinking one thing; he had to get her out.

"I thought we'd have a lot more time to get her out," said Dove. "I didn't think it was going to catch on fire that fast."

Savannah was trapped inside, but Dove was not giving up.

"I took my pocket knife and tried to cut the seat belt off, and I tried to get her out pull everything tried to open the door," Dove remembered. "The door wouldn't move, so I tried to pull her out of the car but I think she was already gone."

Dove thought Savanna had passed away. But he still felt the need to get her body out of the car.

The flames inside the vehicle began to spread and the heat became so intense Dove was forced to back away.

Helpless. All Dove could do was stand and watch. Savanna was gone.

"I prayed that she wouldn't feel anything in that," he said. "I feel like she didn't."

Dove returned to the accident scene Friday. He noticed some of Savanna's belongings that were charred from the fire: clothes and some college assignments. That reminded him of his daughter who is currently attending college.

While some run away from danger, Dove showed courage running toward it trying to help his fellow man. But he doesn't think his actions were heroic.

"You have to do what you have to do … what you can do to save someone You can't just pass them by, you have to do what you can," said Dove.

Spoken like a true hero.
