The Sam Houston Statue in Huntsville looms large over Interstate 45 in Walker County and is approaching its one millionth visitor.
The statue honors Texas hero General Sam Houston. His forces defeated Santa Anna and gained Texas its independence. Houston was elected the first President of the Republic of Texas.
Houston's statue is located in Huntsville, the location of his home and final resting place.
"Big Sam" stands 67 feet tall and can be seen up to six miles away. The roadside statue is the third tallest statue in the U.S. and has been described as one of the largest statues of an American hero.
As of May 10, nearly 997,500 visitors have visited the statue from over a hundred countries.
