Former UC President Joseph A. Steger dies at 76

CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) -

Joseph A. Steger, the 24th President of the University of Cincinnati (UC), has died.

UC officials say he passed away on May 9 at the age of 76.

Steger served as president from 1984 to 2003, the second-longest term in UC's history.

He earned his PhD in psychophysics and MS in experimental psychology from Kansas State University after graduating from Gettysburg College with a degree in psychology.

According to school officials, he came UC in 1982 as Senior Vice President and Provost, recruited by then-president Henry R. Winkler.

He was named president on July 6, 1984.

As president, he left a formidable legacy, including a focus on the rebirth of the campus and athletics, a commitment to learning and teaching, connections with the Cincinnati community, cutting costs, raising funds and the globalization of UC's undergraduate curriculum.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, son Marty, daughter Tracy McClorey and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held, to be announced at a later date.
