Craig to Detroit? A city-to-city comparison

(FOX19) -

The clock is ticking for Detroit city leaders to choose their next police chief. With Cincinnati's chief reportedly on the short list, FOX19 is breaking down how the two cities compare.

Cincinnati:

  • Population: 296, 943
  • Size: 77.94 sq. mi
  • Median Household Income: $34,104
  • Projected Deficit: $35 million
  • Police Officer Salaries: No raises starting in 2010
  • Officers: 972 (sworn)
  • Chief Salary: $138,000
  • Homicides 2012: 53
  • Homicides 2011: 67
  • Homicides 2010: 72

Detroit:

  • Population: 706,585
  • Size: 138.75 sq. mi.
  • Median Household Income: $27,862
  • Projected Deficit: $386 million
  • Police Officer Salaries: 10% pay cut in August 2012
  • Officers: 2,800
  • Chief Salary: $85,700 - $140,500
  • Homicides 2012: 386
  • Homicides 2011: 344
  • Homicides 2010: 308

The Emergency Manager, Kevyn Orr, who is essentially running the city in its financial crisis and the Mayor of Detroit, Dave Bing, talked about the candidates Tuesday but have not made an official offer.

Because the Emergency Manager has final say right now in Detroit, no council approval is required, which means the announcement could come at any time.
