Crews rescue man trapped under bridge for days

LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Emergency crews freed 54-year-old Michael Worthey, who was trapped in his truck under a bridge for several days.

Emergency workers from East Limestone Fire, Athens Limestone Rescue, and Harvest Fire gingerly lifted Worthey to safety Tuesday. To do it they had to tear apart the remains of his truck, which was a twisted wreck already.

"You can look at the truck before we started extricating him, and been surprised there was anybody alive in it to start with," said East Limestone Fire Chief Joey Boyd.

Worthey told rescuers he'd been under the small bridge on the side of Love Branch Road near the Limestone Correctional Facility since he ran off the road on Sunday.

The road is a busy one, but it took a corrections officer out exercising his dogs to glance down into the brush to spot him by chance.

"After I got down there, I knew he couldn't crawl out because he was pinned in but he was moving his arms," said Lt. Gary Mealer with Limestone Corrections. "He was talking but he was real light, you couldn't hardly hear him."

Worthey was flown to Huntsville Hospital with multiple injuries.

Emergency workers were amazed to find him alive in this mess, especially if he'd been down there as long as it seems he was.

"He would have been deceased if he'd stayed there probably the rest of the day," said Boyd.

For now, Worthey's relatives have been shuttling between Athens and the hospital and keeping watch at the ICU as they wait for word on how he's coming along.

Huntsville Hospital said Worthey is now listed in good condition.
