Hundreds gather around spirit rock at SFA to celebrate the lives of 3 students

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Hundreds of Stephen F. Austin students gathered around spirit rock on campus Monday evening to honor the memory of 3 of their friends who lost their lives in a tragic weekend accident.

Tears slid down cheeks, voices cracked and perfect strangers gave tight hugs as nearly 500 students, friends and faculty remembered Kamilla Burgos-Carrillo, Hunter Buck and Patrick Fagan.

The current president of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity chapter at SFA, Jason, spoke at the candlelight vigil.

"They would appreciate this," said Jason. "I know they're looking down on us and I know they're watching down on us from a better place right now. I love all 3 of you and I'll see you soon."

Dr. Adam Peck, SFA Dean of Students, says he didn't know the students but he's learned over the past few days that they were true friends to everyone who knew them.

"Why do these things happen?,"said Peck. "I wish I could tell you. I'm afraid that one's a little out of my scope."

Friends of Kamilla, Hunter and Patrick painted spirit rock red, wrote their names on it and taped up pictures so all those who knew them could celebrate the lives that were cut too short.

Executive Director of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, Leslie Watson came to support the TKE family during their time of loss.

Watson had just met Hunter a few weeks ago during the Miss Greek Pageant.

"You could just tell that he was a neat kid and you could tell that he was going to have a really great future so that even brings it home more closely to us in our office,"said Watson.

Hunter, Kamilla and Patrick were killed Saturday after a 2-vehicle crash on Highway 315 in Rusk County. The driver Kevin Garcia, 19, remains in the hospital with serious injuries.

The investigating DPS trooper says Garcia was drinking Saturday night. Garcia could face three charges of intoxicated manslaughter pending his toxicology results
