KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

The wife of a Kilgore firefighter lost her battle with cancer shortly after 10 p.m. on Tuesday. Kim Baxter was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago, shortly after her husband, Jason, joined the Kilgore Fire Department.

According to Kilgore firefighter Josh McDowell, the department is holding a benefit for the family on May 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kilgore Walmart. You may also make donations to the Kilgore Professional Firefighters Association Local 2996.

Kim, who was 34, leaves behind her husband and a 3-year-old daughter.

"Being a firefighter is more than just helping the community, we're a brotherhood. I can't wrap my mind around it I been married 21 years with two teenage daughters and I couldn't imagine if I was in his shoes," says fellow firefighter Billy Cunningham.

Firefighters covered Jason's shifts on their own time, to ensure he gets a paycheck while he spent all of his time at Kim's side.
