Smale Riverfront Park set to double in size

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Cincinnati's Smale Riverfront Park is one of the newest attractions in the Queen City.

Located adjacent to The Banks development, visitors can enjoy outdoor fountains, walking/bike trails and more. Now, it's about to get even bigger.

Project Manager David Prather says in about two weeks, crews will finish several new features that will more than double the size of the park.

One is the Duke Energy Garden, located just east of the Main Street Fountain. The garden will include more walking paths and bike trails, and even 12 family-size porch swings offering a front-row seat to traffic on the Ohio River. The Women's Committee Garden will also be a new feature.

"We're halfway complete with building a new front porch, front lawn, I guess, for downtown Cincinnati," said Prather.

The beautification project is a plus for local runners like Marty Michna, who says the new surroundings offer more fitness motivation.

"Now with the trees and the waterfalls, it makes it much, much nicer for people to walk by here. It's encouraging," said Michna.

Prather says they hope to build a boat dock, as well as more riverwalks in 2014.

Officials say once fully complete, Smale Riverfront Park will extend from the east at Great American Ball Park to west as far as Paul Brown Stadium.

The entire park is set to be complete by May 2017.
