SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport Police have arrested a local man accused of committing a hit and run crash that claimed the life of a homeless man over the weekend.

Police say Edward Thomas, 62, turned himself in about 3 p.m. Monday. Thomas is accused of committing a hit and run crash that claimed the life of a homeless man.

71-year-old Samuel Leon Smith was struck by while riding a bike along the 2400 block of Southern Avenue around 7 p.m. Smith died of his injuries shortly after arriving at LSU Medical Center. He had no identification on him, police said then.

During a continuing investigation, Shreveport Police say they received information that could possibly link a truck driven by Thomas to the crime.

Authorities, upon processing the information, were able to determine that the vehicle, a silver 2006 Chevrolet pickup, had sustained damage consistent with the tragic crash.

Authorities say they ultimately determined that the vehicle in discussion was the one involved in the collision that killed Samuel Smith.

Upon his surrender to police, Thomas was booked into the Shreveport City Jail on charges of felony hit and run driving, no drivers license and operating a vehicle while under suspension for certain prior offenses.
