NEW BOSTON, TX (KSLA) -

New Boston's police chief of 23 years is out of job as of Monday night. A special meeting of city officials resulted in a "no confidence" vote on Kerry Pinkham.

Pinkham says he got a letter last week from Mayor Johnny Branson notifying him of the meeting, but it gave no explanation as to why.

"They have given me no reason why they have a lack of confidence. And anything that I say or do or come up with at this point will be pure speculation at this point," Pinkham says.

Pinkham has worked with the New Boston Police Department for 41 years, the last 23 of them as chief.

"I feel I have served the citizens of New Boston to the best of my abilities. I have made a big difference to the City of New Boston, Texas. I have no animosity nothing to say but hold my head up and move on."

It was standing room only in the city council chambers of one East Texas city as the council decided to part ways with a longtime police chief.

Support of confidence by New Boston citizens of Police Chief Kerry Pinkham at Monday's meeting did not resonate with the city council.

"I put to you in a motion that we dismiss Chief Pinkham," said Councilman Joe Dikes.

After the motion, the council voted unanimously to fire Pinkham.

"The issue is a lack of confidence the council have in the police department," Councilman David Turner says.

Council members said that their decision was partly due to a drug problem in the city and to complaints by residents at a recent council meeting.

"How was I to know that there were complaints on Frost Street when nobody mention the fact that there were complaints on Frost Street," Pinkham said during the meeting.

After the meeting, council members did not have much to say about their vote.

The majority of those at the meeting supported Pinkham. One supporter, Steve Mockler, says he is taking the firing personally.

"My son had a rifle barrel in his mouth, and Mr. Pinkham talked him out of committing suicide. And I owe him a lot. And what happened tonight is the biggest miscarriage of justice I have ever seen."

Pinkham worked with the New Boston Police Department for 41 years, the last 23 as police chief.

"If they can live with it, I can live with it. I am going to go home and do something beside police. I have done it since I was 18," Pinkham says.

Ghost stories and haunted houses have long been a popular past time, but just how much truth is there to the legends? "As Shakespeare said there are more things in heaven and earth then are in your books,” says Big Foot Expert Jeff Hurley. “There are things we don't understand." At the April 21, Paranormal Conference, experts in the subject came together to further explore their theories.

East Texas animal control officers are warning the public to be watchful of bats that may carry rabies. Of the 17 calls this year to Longview animal control for bats, 6 bats were tested for rabies, 11 were released by the persons that were exposed to them. "Often time people that get rabies from bats, don't realize they've come in contact with one.
