A short distance east of Dallas another Bush library is opening. It may be a little smaller, but it's still bringing joy and education to whoever stops by.
The Little Bush Library at the Salvation Army Center of Hope is in honor of former First Lady Barbara Bush and her mission of literacy.
"She's just done so much for us in her fight for literacy that we just wanted to do something tangible for her," Literacy Council Executive directorNancy Crawford, said.
After Barbara Bush visited Tyler in January of 2012, the Literacy Council of Tyler decided to thank her by installing the little library.
"First of all, we want to remind everyone that Mrs. Bush cares about reading more than anything else. That's why her name is right there, and secondly to make sure we have good books in front of people, so they can access them," Crawford said.
Corps officer of the Salvation Army, Doris Lawrence, said the library will be used by the women and children who stay at the Salvation Army shelter.
"We get a lot of people who come in here as a family and it just feels good to be able to just hand them a book. And at such an early age, even to have their parents sit down with them and read with them. It's just really exciting," Lawrence said.
Lawrence said the library will also provide a chance for education for many children in a tough transitional period.
"A lot of the children's education suffers because of the relocation and relocation and relocation. It's so important to us to break the cycle at a young age and teach them the important things in life. Reading is one of those," Lawrence said.
Nancy is hoping this library will change that.
"They are children without homes and we don't want them to be children without books," Crawford said.
